Process of DNA Test in India

All the living organisms, including human beings, have their genetic information stored

in the DNA. A few microorganisms are the exceptions, who, rather, store their genetic

information within RNA. DNA tests in India are becoming more popular and are easily

available.

Functions a DNA test services

Being the genetic material of an individual, a DNA test finds its use in many areas,

the main ones being -

  • Relationship identification,

  • Forensic investigation,

  • Prediction of genetic diseases in unborn,

  • Immigration documentation,

  • DNA test for Organ transplantation, etc.

Process of a DNA test in India

Almost any living cell of a human’s body may serve as a viable sample for a DNA test.

Sterilized buccal swabs are rubbed against the inside of the cheeks of a person, from

where the epithelial cells are collected.

In the laboratory, the DNA is extracted from the sample. With the help of specialized

enzymes, a long strand of the DNA is cut into fragments, called STRs (Short Tandem

Repeats). Using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), the STRs are amplified for the study.

Finally, the test results are received in the form of genetic fingerprints,

which are unique arrangements of base-pair sequences of the DNA. This unique

fingerprint is then matched with other samples to establish a relationship between two

or more individuals. Many Laboratories are providing a DNA test in India

but one should carefully choose the laboratory, having NABL accreditation and

approved by the government for doing legal DNA tests for court cases also.
